As we enter the final third of 2017, let’s look back at one of the Korean makeup techniques that went viral this past year.
Have you heard of jamsu (잠수)? This "diving" makeup trick was tried by many popular YouTubers, also known as makeup gurus, and was also tested by beauty magazines and websites worldwide. Jamsu became a trend and it was raved about. It apparently helps your makeup last much longer and will make your skin look more fresh. However, there’s a catch because the process of jamsu will literally give you the chills.
Jamsu involves submerging your face in a bowl of ice cold water. Yes. Not just your ordinary room temperature water, but it has to be really cold water. As they say, "Beauty is pain."
The process is really easy. First, put on your base makeup, which could be your primer, foundation, BB cream, cushion or concealer. Follow that with a thick layer of baby powder or loose powder all over your face. Then you have to "dive," or in this case submerge your face in to a bowl of cold water for 30 seconds. Divide this into three 10-second steps, unless you have great lungs. After that, gently pat away the water and baby powder residue with a towel and continue with your usual makeup routine.
The science behind this makeup hack is supposedly because the cold water keeps your makeup more intact. The water somewhat "pushes" back the makeup into your skin and makes the adhesion better. Many have reported that it actually works well, especially for those who have oily skin or during the summer. Some say that undergoing the jamsu helped their skin look smoother, as the ice water helps to minimize the appearances of the pores.
It’s no surprise that a lot of people want to try this jamsu trick to emulate the great skin condition that celebrities always seem to have.
